At least from my experience, I usually have to do manual extractions of data via some software interface instead of having direct access to the database itself, and even when I have access to a SQL Server it is mostly for data manipulation that I have to enter the data I manually extracted, so the manipulation could be done by other tools. One issue I have with SQL is that you don't always have access to it depending on your job as a Data Analyst. If you're not a DataBase Analyst, I don't think you'll need to go in depth with SQL, but you need to know the basics of how to query and merge tables to get your desired view, maybe with a few manipulations of columns, and then export that data into some other program (like Excel,PowerBI,Python).
